What If He MEANT It?

“…just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.”
~John 13:34

We all know that Jesus said that we are to love one another. But that’s not all He said. He said that we are supposed to love one another as He loves us. That’s a tall order, I know, especially when you think about His ability to forgive—let alone His grace!

How are we to love as God loves? For me, I start by letting in His love. I bathe in His glorious light and ponder the fact that I have done nothing to deserve it; it is freely given. Only then can I begin to understand His love for me—a sinner, fallible, broken, unable to fathom His magnitude and magnificence—yet, He loves me! At night when I sit out under the stars, I know that my place in God’s universe is incredibly infinitesimal. If God can love a little speck like me, and love me in spite of all of my shortcomings, surely, I can open my heart to another one of His children—a child that He loves just as much as He loves me!

I know I will never love as God loves, for I’m not God, I’m not that perfect. But I try to emulate Him to the best of my ability because I’m sure that Jesus meant what He said. We are to love others as He loves us, which means completely, no strings attached. That’s a high bar, I know, but it’s one worth stretching for every day.

You Are SO This!

“So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God
he created them; male and female he created them.”
~Genesis 1:27

“Tell them how beautiful they are, ” God said as I was waking up.

“Mmmmmmmmmmm,” I said, as I sleepily opened my eyes. I sat up and stretched.

“Remind them that they are made in my image,” He encouraged.

“I haven’t even had my coffee yet, Big Guy! Give me a minute, for heaven’s sake!” I teased.

“It’s important that they take to heart what they are. They are so precious. So very, very precious. And they forget, you know,” God whispered gently. I knew His words were for me, too.

“Yes, I know,” I said, and kicked off the covers. I padded into the bathroom, and there sat the scale, glaring at me. “Boy, do I know!”  I looked in the mirror. An aging woman stared back at me. I averted my eyes so as to not see all the wrinkles and gray hair.

“Don’t look away!” God scolded me. “Look at yourself as if you are looking into my eyes.”

I raised my gaze to my reflection. I pretended I was looking into God’s eyes and suddenly, I saw the beauty of my soul. It didn’t matter, my skin and hair. “You are beautiful Sparrow because you are made in my image,” God explained. I kept my gaze on my reflection until I could feel God’s words all the way down to the marrow in my bones. “Please, tell everyone how beautiful they are,” He asked me again.

“Yes, God. I’ll tell them.” I walked into the kitchen and made myself a cup of coffee. Outside, the sun was peeking over the horizon. I waved a cheery hello to her and sat down by the window to watch the day arrive. It was a beautiful sunrise!

Can You Hear What’s Calling You?

“…for the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.”
~Romans 11:29

mitt5dgj48s-john-stingMy wish for you is that you slow down today; stop your hurrying and listen. Can you hear the dream that God has placed in your heart? It’s calling you.

I wish for you the wisdom to not chase your dream, for dreams don’t need chasing. They need coaxing and encouragement, for they are sometimes timid and shy. They need to be able to trust that you will take good care of them before they unfold big and bold in your life.

Listen to what is calling you. Nurture and protect it. Always respect the importance of the dream God has given you.
