“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit?”
~1 Corinthians 6:19
After a simple meal at my house, my friend Paula and I sat and shared ideas about our goals for 2017. “I want to take tender loving care of my animal,” she said. “You know, my body.”
I nodded in agreement. I want that, too. I went to sleep thinking about the simplicity but profundity of her goal. What if we all decided to take tender loving care of our bodies this year? What would we give up? What would we add? Less unhealthy food choices? More time spent walking and exercising? Less time at our desks under fluorescent lights and more time out in nature under the beautiful sky? Our bodies house the most incredible thing on the planet: the Holy Spirit. Yet, we so often mistreat or ignore our bodies. We often don’t like our bodies! Sometimes, it even feels as if we are at war with the flesh and bones that contain God’s Spirit.
I’m committing this year to take tender loving care of my animal—this body I live in. I’m committing to like my animal, no matter how wrinkled, saggy, or tired it may be. I’m committing to knowing with my whole heart, that my body houses God’s Spirit. Will you commit to taking tender loving care of your animal this year?
