“But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”
My workday had ended and I was going over my accomplishments in my mind. I can do more, I thought to myself, and hastily made a list of action items to attend to in the coming days. As I put down the list, a gentle breeze blew into the room, lifting my hair playfully. “Trying to get my attention, God?” I asked.
“You’re too busy, Sparrow,” God whispered to me.
“But it’s work, God. It’s what I have to do,” I explained.
But that list you made is filled with things that come from your pride, not from me,” God said gently.
I looked over the list again. True, there were things on it that I thought would put more of a spotlight on me. I nodded, “You’re probably right about that,” I said.
“It’s wonderful to want to get ahead or improve. But true ambition isn’t about earning more money, popularity, or fame. It’s not about you. True ambition is to live out the purpose I’ve given you and to walk humbly with Me. It’s about being of service.” God explained.
I thought about God’s words, then looked at my list again. I crossed off a few of the items. I added: Live out my purpose. Humble myself before God. Be of service.
“Atta Girl,” God said and patted me on the back.
I smiled. “We’re good now?” I asked.
“We were never not good,” God chuckled. “Remember, true ambition means that you’ll reap rewards beyond your wildest dreams. Wait and see.”
